Do you know when the first alarm clock was created? The first alarm clock was created in 1787 by a man name Levi Hutchins who was from New Hampshire, Massachusetts. Before he made the first alarm clock, in certain parts of the country you would hear the sound of a rooster crowing early in the morning. When Levi created the alarm clock, he created it so that it went off at 4 AM in the morning. After the creation of the alarm clock in 1787, years later in 1959, a company called Westclox made the first electrical alarm clock. Through their modification of the alarm clock, Westclox made their version to have a snooze button which allowed a person to sleep for an extra five to ten minutes.
The question that I began to ponder in my heart was why do people hit the snooze button on their alarm clocks? According to one online article I read, it stated that “more than a third of American adults hit their snooze button at least three times each morning”. In that same article it also quoted that “more than half of people ages 25 to 34 hit their snooze button on their clocks daily”. Two reasons I believe why people feel they have to hit their snooze button is because they feel they have not gotten enough sleep. A second reason why some people feel they have to keep hitting their snooze button is that they are emotionally drained and they feel they are not ready to deal with the pressure of the day.
As I pondered these two reasons further, the Spirit of God spoke to my heart that the same way people hit their snooze button in the natural, my people also hit the snooze button in their spiritual life. When we continuously hit the snooze button in our spiritual life, we let procrastination rob us of time and opportunities. When we are hitting the snooze button in our spiritual life, we can lose sight that the Lord has a divine assignment and has a work for us to do. Finally, when we are hitting the snooze button in our spiritual life we surrender our authority to command our morning according to God’s will for our lives.
How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man (Proverbs 6:9-11).
Hitting the Snooze Button
In addition to my research on why people hit their snooze button before getting out of bed, there were also articles which talked about the harmful effects to people who consistently did it. There are some sleep experts who believe you can do more harm to yourself by hitting the snooze button because it can throw off your internal clock off. You set your alarm to go off at 5:00 AM in the morning but when the alarm goes off, you hit the snooze button a few times but you do not get up until 5:30 AM. The following morning your alarm clock goes off at 5:00 AM again, you hit your snooze button a few times again but you finally get up at 6:00 AM and you are running late for work. Yes I do believe if a person is not getting the proper amount of sleep this can make it difficult for them to get up in the morning and start heir day. However, if hitting the snooze button has become a chronic issue in a person life, this behavior could be evidence to a bigger problem for them.
When a person has a chronic issue in hitting their snooze button, what the Spirit of God revealed to me is that person always procrastinate in doing what the Lord has called them to do. Have you ever heard of the saying you snooze, you lose? When that statement is made about someone, what is really being said about them is that they are slow to respond in what they are supposed to do. It can also mean that when a person had a season to prepare and be ready for opportunities to come their way, they allowed procrastination to cause them to waste the time to prepare themselves for next level of blessing. Procrastination is a thief that robs you of time and opportunities. My brother I encourage you to stop hitting the snooze button in your life. The Lord does want to bless you but He cannot bless you when you have a lazy and slothful spirit.
God Has called you to Work
When I was little kid growing up in my parents’ home, my mother and father both worked for the city of Detroit. My mother got me ready for school and herself for work. My mother traveled to downtown Detroit where she worked for the city of Detroit Finance Department. My father also got up early in the morning and traveled to his job and worked for the city of Detroit Water Department. Both of my parents caught the bus to and from work five days a week and modeled before me the importance of having a strong work ethic. Were these jobs my parents dream jobs that they had always wanted to have since they were kids, the answer to that question was no. However, I believe the purpose of God for my parents was to teach me that I needed to have a strong work ethic. When the alarm clock when off in our home, hitting the snooze button was not an option because there was work that needed to be done.
When we hit the snooze button in our spiritual life, it can cause us to lose sight that the Lord has a purpose for our life. Many of us get up every morning to go to a job but what the Lord has called us to have in our life is a career. He wants us to have a career which is a part of His plan and work that will bring light in dark places of the marketplace (Matthew 5:16). We have to stop hitting the snooze button in our life so that we don’t embrace the mentality that today is just another day and another dollar. You man of God are the workmanship of the Lord who has been created in Christ Jesus for good works (Ephesians 2:10). When you begin your day, begin it with prayer asking the Lord to fill you with the knowledge of His will, His wisdom and all spiritual understanding. In your quiet place of prayer ask the Lord to give you the ability to be fruitful in every gook work and to prosper the work of your hands (Colossians 1:9-10).
Wake up and command your morning
A former Super Bowl champion name Ray Lewis once said “we should never allow our alarm clock to be the only reason why we get up in the morning”. When you open your eyes and your feet hit the floor, the kingdom of darkness should yell oh no, he’s up and we are in trouble. The Lord has not called you to hit your snooze button, however, He has called you to exercise your authority by commanding your morning. When you command your morning, you are to declare to yourself that there is a sense of destiny on the inside you and by God’s grace you will fulfill it. The present situation that you are dealing with right now is the process which will help you to see the breakthrough for your life tomorrow. Do not allow procrastination to rob you of the blessing that God has for you by causing you to hit the snooze button of resentment, bitterness, and fear. Do not hit the snooze button of slothfulness which can cause you to miss the timing of God and fail to move with the Lord when He commands you to move. Make up in your heart my brother that you will do what the Lord has called you to do and command your morning and command the dawn to know its place (Job 38:12).
Finally, the word morning is not just about a certain period of time when we get up to start our day. The word morning can also symbolize the beginning of a new dawn or new chapter one life. Prior to us experiencing a new morning, we may have gone through a very dark season which we felt like would never come to an end. During the dark season, we have been believing, praying and standing on the word of God for our circumstance to change. However, though we have been standing on God’s promises we have at the same time experienced heartache, disappointment and shed a lot of tears. Our night season could have also been filled with distress, sorrow, and pressure which we make a person feel that they are past their breaking point. However, I am reminded what the Psalmist wrote in Psalms 30:5 that says “weeping endure for a night but joy will come in the morning”. The Lord is preparing you my brother for you to have a new chapter in your relationship with Him which will touch and inspire so many people lives. He has called you and me to be about His business and not to hit the snooze button on our physical, emotional and spiritual life.
