Witnessing the birth of your child is a life-changing experience for parents. Prior to the birth of your child, the newborn is initially conceived at conception in their mother’s womb. As both parents go to all of their prenatal checkups, they hear the heartbeat of their child for the first time during the ultrasound. The mother more and more experiences the movement of the child in her body which she then shares the news with her husband. They may elect to learn the gender of the child during the pregnancy or they may choose to wait to find out at the time of birth. However, nine months later the mother‘s water breaks and shortly after that gives birth to their wonderful gift from the Lord. It does not matter if the method of childbirth is natural or by C section, however, the cry of the child is evidence to the world that they are born in this life for a purpose.

Now there are two dates in a man’s life that he does not have control over when they happen to him. The first date that happens in his life which he cannot control is the date of his birth. He cannot control the time, the location, and the events which lead up to his birth. The second date that later on happens in his life which he cannot control is the date of his death. When the time comes for him to die if the Lord tarries, he will take his last breath and close his eyes for the final time on this side of glory. However, the one thing that the Lord does allow a man to have control of in his life is the dash in the middle which is between the sunrise and the sunset of his life. The dash represents the life in which he has lived either having Jesus in his life or him choosing to reject Jesus in his life. The dash also represents in his life did he come to and discover why he was born. The dash represents if a person come to understand his identity and did he discover and fulfill his purpose from the Lord.

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
Before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:4-5).

 You were born with a purpose

On three different occasions, my life was almost taken by gun violence. The first two were through the misunderstanding with the police and the other one was attempted by someone trying to have me killed. When the person came to my door he asked would I come outside to hang out with him for a while. As I was standing at the front door of my grandmother’s home debating if I sure come out, I noticed someone by a vehicle crouching down trying not to be seen by someone. As I saw the person trying to hide behind the care, I heard my grandmother in the other room of the house demanding that I did not go outside. I asked her could I please go out but she emphatically said no so I told the person we would hang out later and I close the door. A few minutes later I heard gunshots outside of my house and a friend of mine had been shot and I had to bring him into the house to call an ambulance so that he would not bleed to death. As I saw how my friend was bleeding, the reality set in that had I when I outside, I could have been shot as well and maybe been killed. I look back on that moment and I realized that the Lord had shielded me from the pending danger of me losing my life though I did not know it was Him. The Lord used my grandmother to keep me from going outside that day because He knew I was born with a purpose.

You to my brother may have had a similar experience as I did and the Lord kept you from the danger of losing your life through gun violence. Also, you may have been my friend who had been shot multiple times and was rushed to the hospital and the Lord used the doctors to save your life. You did not know the Lord was with you but He made sure that the devil was not going to cause you to be another statistic of gun violence. In Jeremiah 1:4-5, the Lord told the Prophet Jeremiah that before he was born that “He knew him, He sanctified him and had ordained him to be a prophet to the nations”. The same way that the Lord knew Jeremiah in his mother’s womb, the Lord also has known me and you before we were born in this world. You may not know what your purpose is at this moment but that does not change the truth that God allowed you to be born for a purpose. You were separated from your mother’s womb by the grace of God so that you could complete the work that was ordained for you and no one else (Galatians 1:15).

 How to understand your purpose

When we purchase a particular electronic product such as an HD Smart TV, a Blue Ray player, or iPhone we do so because that product will meet a want or a need in our lives. However, because there are so many features that these products have in them we may not fully understand how to use them. If we are connecting our Smart TV to our cable box for the first time, if we are not sure what to do, instead of going to the manual, we instead spend hours trying to do it ourselves. We may attempt to call some friends who have a similar Smart TV but we are not able to reach them so we leave a voice message for them to call us back. We go online to YouTube and we try to find the same model so we can try to follow the person instructions step by step. However, after some time we finally get things working though we fully don’t understand how to work it and we never truly understand how the TV will benefit our entertainment pleasure.

How does a person find out their purpose in life? I believe the answer to that question begins by the person knowing that they were made in God’s image and His likeness. In Psalms 100:3 the word of God says that Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves”. Though it is good to have close friends and people that we can talk with about how to discover our purpose, they within themselves can never truly give us the answers we really need. Just as we should go to the manual that the manufacturer provided with their product to understand the purpose of it, we too should go to the Lord who can help us to understand our purpose. The late Dr. Myles Munroe once said that “if a person does not know the purpose of a thing or person, because of their ignorance they will abuse that the person or thing. The Lord has provided us His word, His Spirit, and His Presence to help us not be ignorant in knowing what our purpose is in life. In Proverbs 20:5 the word of God says that “the purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out”. He is not only able to show us what our purpose is but to also help us understand that revelation comes with a price that His Son died on the cross to pay on our behalf (Galatians 2:20).

You’re Identity and Your Purpose

Did you know if you did an online search with Google that you would learn that there are over 7 billion people on this planet?  With that many people on the planet, it is amazing that no two people are the same and we all have our own unique personality. No two people can laugh the same, no two people can cry the same because we were all made different by God’s design. Each one of us rather male or female have our own set of fingerprints which are not the same and can help us to be identified by others. When God made man in Genesis 1:26, He never made him that he would believe that his identity and purpose could be found in people. He never made the man that he would believe that his identity and purpose could be discovered in how much money he would make or the career that he would have. Our identity and purpose cannot be found in the latest brand name sneakers that we wear on our feet but our identity and purpose are found only in God.

In our society took many of our men young and old are confused about their sexuality and they do not understand who they are as a male. Sadly because they don’t have a strong godly male presence in their life they turn to violence, homosexuality, or drug addiction trying to fill the emptiness in their lives. It is only through the Lord and His word that He can break the generational curses over them which have them believing it is acceptable for a man to be with another man. As men, we must not live our lives in a fog of confusion about what manhood is about and feel like the only answer for a man is to have a sex change or become transgender. Your identity my brother is connected to your purpose that the Lord has given you. Stop looking to the world to define who you are and stop looking at the past failures of other men who have disappointed you. However, allow the word of God to be the compass to help you discover who God made you to be and to be able to navigate through the storms of life. The scripture in Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago”.
