Back in October 2014, Marvel Studios made a major announcement to a large audience at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The announcement was made by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige who announced their upcoming movies that were scheduled to be made and release from 2014 to 2019. Prior to Marvel’s announcement, they had made a total of ten movies, and their latest one which Guardians of the Galaxy Volume One was the highest-grossing movie at that time. The next twelve movies that Marvel planned to release were a part of their phase three of movies. The movies which Marvel planned to make would be sequels of existing movie characters and also new movie characters that would come to the big screen for the first time. Some of these movies were Captain America 3, Civil War, Black Panther, and Marvel Avengers Infinity War and Endgame. As the announcement of these new movies was made, the audience present and online were so excited for Marvel’s vision that everyone who heard the news was looking forward to the next five years of their life and these movies being made.
We fast forward to today and just this past week, Marvel released their final film Marvel Avengers Endgame which made over three hundred fifty million dollars their opening weekend. The movie is on pace to break all types of box office records by becoming the fifth highest-grossing movie domestically and internationally. As I thought about how Marvel carried out their vision of these twenty-two movies, it also had me think about how the power of vision should impact our lives as well. Now there are three we things need to understand about the power of vision. The first thing that we need to have is a clear understanding of what the word vision really means. The second that we need to understand is that vision is not personal. Finally, the third we need to understand about the power of vision is when we don’t obey it we will live our lives without restraint.
Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he (Proverbs 29:18).
What is vision?
The first thing that we need to have is a clear understanding of what the word vision really means. When you research what the word vision online, you find that there are several different ways that the word vision is defined. When the word vision is described as a noun, vision can mean “a person having the faculty or power of being able to see or to observe”. When a person wants to have their eyes checkout and want to know they don’t have a blurry or distorted vision they go to their eye doctor. The word vision can also mean “having the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom”. When we refer to the word vision in this way, we speak about it from the perspective when we make plans for our lives, our communities, and others. The word vision can also be described when a person says that have a vision of a person, place, or thing that they personally experience at that moment.
However, when the word of God speaks about vision for our lives, the true source of vision comes from the Lord. In our quiet time of being alone with the Father, He can reveal His vision or revelation for us through the word of the Lord. The vision of God comes alive in our hearts, it will help to bring order, structure, and direction of how we are to live and serve in the kingdom of God. The word of God says in Habakkuk 2:2-3 “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry”. When we write things down in our lives, we will be able to better remember what someone has told us and be able to have greater percentage in accomplishing what needs to be done. Despite what you may have had to go through or what you had to survive the simple fact that you are still here is evidence that the Lord has a purpose for you. You have the responsibility, my sister or brother, to get before the Lord in prayer and His word so that He can reveal the power of vision in your life.
Vision is not personal
The second thing that we need to understand is vision is not personal. According to the word of God in Proverbs 29:18, vision is not personal but vision is corporate. When vision is revealed to a person, that vision is going to bless people, bless a community, and a nation when it is obeyed. A big mistake that most people make when it comes to receiving the vision of God for their lives, is that they sometimes keep God’s vision to themselves. They refuse to share what the Lord implanted in their hearts because they are effected by the mindset that they feel no one should know their business. When we were growing up as children, we told by our parents that people should not know our business and what goes on with our life. Another way it was put to us by our mothers and fathers was what goes on in this house, stays in this house. However, the problem with that attitude is that the Lord did not give you His vision because you better than the next person or you knew more bible than the next one. You were given His vision because He trusted you that you would do His will and you would be an instrumental that cause His kingdom to come here on Earth as it is in Heaven.
In Nehemiah 1:4, when Nehemiah found out the news about His people and the condition that they were in, the word says, “He sat down and wept for many days, fasting and praying before the God of Heaven”. When the Lord spoke to Nehemiah the vision of the Lord on how Nehemiah would was to help bring restoration to the people of God, he began to share the vision with King Artaxerxes the resources that he needed. Nehemiah would go back to his land and share the vision to the people on how the Lord would help them to rebuild the walls, repair the gates and restore lives of people in fifty-two days (Nehemiah 2:1-20). It is time for you my brother to stop tripping over your feeling and why you think people will not receive what the Lord has said to you. It is time for you my sister to stop believing what you think why people don’t like you or God can use you and believe what God says He wants to do through you. The vision of the Lord which has been entrusted to you as a steward is not personal but it is supposed to bless, inspire, and build up God’s people so that they do not perish.
Living life without restraints
Finally, the third we need to understand about the power of vision is when we don’t obey it we will live our lives without restraint. In other Bible translations the word vision is translated as revelation. The word perish in other Bible translation is replaced with the word “the people cast off restraint”. I believe that word perish does not just speak about physical death but it also death to opportunities, death to dreams and people living their lives without restrains. When a person or people live their lives without restrains it can cause them to worship and seek other false gods instead of the one true and living God. When we read in Exodus 32:1-10 how this acted out by the Children of Israel when they decided not to embrace Jehovah and His word as their one true God. When Moses the representative of the Lord when up into the mountain with the Lord, he was up there so long that the people turned to idol worship. The people had Moses brother Aaron to take the gold that they had to build a golden calf to worship as the one who brought them out of Egypt. When Moses had returned and saw the condition of the people, the word of God says in Exodus 32:25 says “Moses saw that the people were unrestrained (for Aaron had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies)”.
In our society that we live in today, we see people living their lives without godly restraints and are perishing. Our prisons have been filled with our fathers because they allowed their moments of crisis to become darker than the vision for their lives. A lack of vision has been evident in the lives of religious leaders in the church who abused their office by sexually abusing our sons and daughters. A percentage of those who serve and protect as police officers abuse their authority by engaging in police brutality because of their fear of the skin color of your black men. However, the only way the tide of our nation is going to turn around is when we return back to the Lord. The word of God says in Zechariah 1:2-3, The Lord has been very angry with your fathers. Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the Lord of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the Lord of hosts. It is time for us to tear down the idols in our lives and allow the Lord reign and sit on the throne of our hearts once again. When we do His vision will bless us, bless our families, and bless His people because we desire to keep the law of the Lord.
